I think you've got a boost leak. Moaning/roaring is likely the noise being
made by your boost pressure escaping through some tear in a pressure hose.
This would explain your sputtering as well. Once the air passes your MAF, it
has been "metered." Once metered, the appropriate amount of fuel is
delivered to the cylinders. If all of the metered air never makes it to the
cylinder (due to a leak), your mixture will become very rich (too much fuel,
too little air). The result is a complete cutout, or a coughing/sputtering
routine.
My guess is that they're looking in the wrong place (ignition), and need to
look at your intake air path. My suggestion would be to pressure test the
intake and repair any leaks... then assess the engine's performance.
