Brian,
I liked my route in both directions, more or less. I went up through
Fort Collins, Laramie, Rawlins and Jackson. The original plan was to go
north out of Jackson, through Yellowstone, out through West Yellowstone
and up to Ennis and Bozeman. The road through Yellowstone was closed
though (although it opens tomorrow), so I went back south of Jackson,
over Teton Pass and north through Idaho to Ennis. As it turned out,
that route was very nice.
Last fall, I went up through Steamboat, Craig, Baggs, Rock Springs and
Jackson. The land south of Jackson is beautiful.
The way back, I went East on I-90 to Columbus, south to Red Lodge then
to Cody, Thermopolis and back to Denver. Original plan was to take
Beartooth Pass, but that too was closed. The Buffalo Bill museum in
Cody was worth the trip all by itself. Spend some time in the hot
springs; they even make Thermopolis bearable (and if you like hunting
trophies, stay at the Holiday Inn).
The only bad news is that there is and incredible amount of nothing in
Wyoming. And, oh by the way, the speed limit on two lane blacktop is 65
mph. I knew I meant to get that V1 before I left. Damn!! Kind of
ironic that I'm driving to a museum in Wyoming that celebrates the wild
independence of the American cowboy and get busted on a 10 mile dead
straight stretch of road for 82 in a 65. WTF, at least he wasn't there
when I crossed the state line at considerably more than that. BTW, watch
for pronghorn, especially at night. Enjoy!

Jim,
I live near Denver and am going to Big Sky, MT for a week (near
Bozeman). Having never made the journey, is there a particular route
that you would recommend for its fun driving, beauty, etc.?
The standard interstate route may not be too exciting, but, it may be
the best. I don't know. What would you recommend? I'm estimating
around 9 hours each way, correct (average about 85 mph, around 750
miles)...
Thanks!
Cheers,
Brian
