Dan,
I must have missed your original post.
Yes, you can back it out. For that you'll need to unbend the metal tab
that holds the head of the bolt #17 secured. I used a long pry bar which
acted as a chisel and a BFH (tm).
I replaced mine with the VW Fox damper last summer.
