I was reading this and thinking, what the fuel pump regulator, do they
have anything to do with it, then I thought oh ya fuel pump relay. I
really dislike acronyms, I have heard they can be linked to the downfall
of most modern societies.

In my case both have been failed. Last summer fuel pump failed. After
left alone for few days, it worked again for 10 to 15 minutes and
started to make lot of noise before failing again. I think this is
normally the case.
My FPR failure was occasional engine stopping and relay clicking very
rapidly when trying to start again. (Btw. ECU is somehow connected to
FPR so ECU should be dead for VAG-COM if FPR fails, I think)
