I remember Ned mentioning that the Fuel pump will not turn on unless the
motor spins faster than 200rpm, I think it a safety feature. Car
crashes, motor stops, fuel pump also stops. I suspect the relay is
connected through the crank position sensor. This I believe means it is
going though the ecu wiring but may be a transparent event to the
VAG-COM and basic engine control. The last sentence is pure speculation
on my part.
One easy way to see if the fuel pump is ok, is to hot wire it, fuel
position 17, from the leg closest to the driver to power and go listen
in the trunk.

Although the ECU is connected to the fuel pump relay, it can't know if
it's still working or not, at least not on the UrS cars.
