I ran into the same problem on my Avant. The areas
around the scews were cracking out, making the back of
the car sound like an old beater. I removed the trim
and bonded strips of sheet metal to the back of the
trim across the holes and damaged areas. I first
trimmed away the vinyl "skin" covering the bond area
and sanded it, then bonded the strips into place and
clamped them overnight. Then I picked up the original
holes through the sheet metal and contact-cemented the
cloth anti-squeak strip over the bare sheet metal. You
cannot see the metal strips and the whole tailgate is
now quiet again, even after my kid's soccer team takes
turns slamming the gate down. I used .040 thick T6
aluminum and aircraft grade fiberglass resin and
hardener. I think any good epoxy aproved for metals
and plastics should work. It took some time and
meticulous clamping, but I'm very happy with the
saving and results. I also used Loctite Plastix two
part super glue for some other areas as needed. Worked
great.
