This one looks very cool, 6k miles will really test the guys in the
sports cars. Highlights, Road America, Laguna Seca, Pikes Peak, Hallett
dirt oval, PIR Mile paved oval...

13 May 2003: One Lap 2004!

We may have gotten this one right. Someone once said organizing One Lap
is like herding cats, and over the past 20 years that has generally been
an apt description. But this time everybody seemed to roll into the
finish in general agreement that the event worked about as well as could
be expected. The weird weather not withstanding, we were able to run the
competition as planned, although the drag strip at Memphis needed at
least another six hours to become bone-dry on the launch pad.

The last few groups who were forced to grope through the fog at Road
America did yeoman work and the sensible behavior on the highways kept
the Cops generally quiet.

Thanks to the solid driving by all competitors, we had minimal
fender-bending and thankfully no injuries beyond a few damaged egos.

It should be noted that in the 20 years of running One Lap over 10
million miles of driving has been recorded with only one person hurt (a
broken collarbone in a rollover on the Angeles Crest in California in
1987). That's a record all of the One Lappers can be proud of.

I'd like to offer a special thanks to our two timing and scoring crews,
whose work was excellent, Mike Roberts for the website, and to my son,
Brock, for his steady hand on the daily controls. He and I have already
begun planning for next year. This much has been accomplished.

Barring any changes, the event will start on Friday afternoon April 30,
2004, at the Tire Rack headquarters in South Bend, Indiana.
The route will go west. Planned stops (not yet confirmed) might include
Road America, Portland International Raceway, Sears Point or Laguna
Seca, Las Vegas, Pikes Peak International, Hallet and an oval and a drag
strip TBA.
The route will be longer by as much as 2000 miles.
The finish will be at The Tire Rack on Saturday, May 8th.
We are considering reversing the starting order at several race tracks
to give the slower classes a first shot at running and an earlier
departure time.
Transponders are being considered for scoring.
The Tire Rack will provide sturdier sidewall markings for the tires,
with a limit of five (or six, if two sizes are used) for each team
during the event.
Your input from the questionnaire indicated a desire to (1) go west (2)
run longer distances and (3) accept one all-day run without a
competition venue---which might be necessary for the drive between Road
America and Portland.

These thoughts are shared with you only in a preliminary state. We'll
continue to keep you updated as plans solidify.

In the meantime, to all of you who competed this year, my sincere
compliments for a wonderful job. Thanks for representing the sport we
all love so effectively.

- Brock Yates

Bruce,

    You're missing a few of the most desirable bits of electronic
doodads out there for a true long-haul speeder:

(A) 40 channel galaxy CB with both upper and lower sidebands - 120
channels total, including the ones the long-haul truckers use (some
shops will be happy to not 'reduce' the power on the thing to the legal
5 watt limit from the stock 10 watt factory setting);

(B) Bearcat or ICOM-ICR71 full spectrum programmable scanner (to get
voice data from all police transmissions), along with an up-to-date
frequency chart for the areas you plan on transiting through;

(C) a data antenna direction & distance finder with frequency selection
(given that something like 95% of cops have computers in their cars, and
these operate at known frequencies at known power levels, being able to
approximate range and direction to the next officer should be within the
realm of any true solder junkie with an electronics degree);

Plus the smart-money non-electronic doodads to go with this:

(D) A license plate that says FAA-TECH or FCC-TRAK on it (explains both
the multiple antennas and makes it less likely you'll be ticketed);

(E) A matching 'safety jacket' with either FAA INVESTIGATOR or FCC
INVESTIGATOR in bright orange reflective letters on it (to hang from the
handle over the rear window... yes, I know where to get these);

(F) A reflective red on white bumper sticker that says "Task Force
Charlie/HLS" in a fairly small (4x8") size.

Cheers!
=-= Marc Glasgow
(who has often covered 450 miles in the USA in under 3.5 hours without
ticketing)
(the again, it's either genetic or societally instilled -- I am German
born & drove there first)

BRUCE WROTE:

Cars should be at least RS2 capable, and have V1 detector and Laser and
Radar jammers (see me for more info on this).
