Hmm, according to the data sheets I've read on o2 sensors,  the
reference air is taken from immediately _outside_ the casing of the
sensor itself (eg _near_ the wires at the top of the sensor but not
actually _through_ them).  There is typically a small hole in the sensor
body at the top through which the sample is gathered.
