I had a similar problem on my '94 S4 - every now and then the rack would
hiss just off the centre position. The noise went away when I drained and
replaced the hydraulic fluid.

I have a 1994 S4, I hear a hissing noise (hydrolic fluid) coming from the
steering collum right next to the servotronic valve.  The hissing stops when
I turn the wheel a little or alot either left or right.  I have disconted
the servotronic valve and the steering assisst is decreased, so I know the
servotronic valve works, but the hissing continues, even with serv-
disconnetcted.  I had the dealer look at it and he said some make the noise
and some dont.  I had him replace the o-rings in the servotronic valve but
no luck. I know the hissing is the loadest coming from the inlet to the
steering system, but can not figure out what is going on.
