K.C. Madsen,
I think your recent problem is a low fluid problem. The brake light comes
on when there is low pressure in the system or when fluid levels are low.
Flickering is usually a sign of being on the verge of triggering the low
fluid brake light. Keep an eye open for leaks somewhere. Small leaks can be
tolerated for a while. Get it fixed if it leaks a lot.
I have two 92 S4's and both of them do not hold pressure in the bomb
overnight. The light comes on when first started after sitting for eight
hours or so. The light stays on for 30 seconds to a minute depending on how
long the car has been sitting. I think it is a bad check valve because once
it is up to pressure, the light never comes on again and I get 12-15 pumps
out of the bomb right after the car is shut off. The fluid level is
effected by the leaky check valve because the fluid in the bomb leaks back
into the reservoir. This results in fluid levels that appear to be normal
when the car is at rest after sitting for a while. As soon as the engine is
started, the hydraulic pump re-pressurizes the bomb by sucking the fluid out
of the reservoir. It takes a few minutes for this to happen when the car
has been sitting. The fluid level will drop after the bomb is
re-pressurized. Adding fluid after the bomb is pressurized will keep the
low brake fluid light from coming on. Add only enough fluid to bring the
level about 1/2 to 3/4 full so the reservoir will not overflow when the bomb
leaks down.
