And to complete that thought, due to premature email sending, I would look at
the remaining threads available, once the distance is made up, and then
attempt to find some engineering data to assess what sort of compression/tension
load such a threaded piece could handle. Compare it to the "S" part, and see
what difference there is.
IME, I've never seen a tie rod assembly where the tie rod end ripped out of
the tube. However, I have seen on several occasion, tie rod assemblies fail
where the tube is crimped to the ends. My bet is that the remaining tie rod
threaded section would handle a greater load than the body of the assembly
itself.
Worth investigating, I think.
