I greatly appreciate your responses and condolences.  I still have not had a
closer look as I could not bear the sight of the hood so decided to console
myself with a bottle of vodka and a lady friend.  It may come as no surprise
that this fix worked quite well - albeit only until I got up this morning.
I will keep you apprised of developments as they occur - with the car that
is.
