[s-cars] Bypass valve thoughts. . .? Random Materials thoughts

I remember reading some years ago a story about a motor that was made
out of a plastic that had metal sleeves in it. Maybe it was a ceramic
block with steel sleeves....

Anybody else remember this? I think it was in popular science.
