Hi Chris;
I just did this job on my '94 S4 with 200k km of salt-bath corrosion on the
original parts.
The tie rod ends were no problem. I popped the tie rod ends out using a
puller against the bottom of the bolt and unscrewed the end out of the rod
using lots of penetrating lube. Note you must back off the tapered locking
collar after you loosen the locking bolt to get the end to turn in the rod.
The control arm was a different story. In spite of lots of penetrant and the
persuasion of a six foot bar I couldn't get the ball joint out of the hub.
Since I had to take it to the dealer for the alignment, I had them change
the control arm. It took two mechanics and a six foot bar to break it loose.
YMMV

Subject: [s-cars] Control Arm and Tie rod end replacement.....how hard
is it?
Hi all!
I have just been informed that one of my S4's needs a new LF control
arm, swaybar bushings and tie rod ends.
How hard of a job is it to replace the tie rod ends and control arm on
an S4? Is there a write up anywhere ?...I looked but haven't found one
yet.
Thanks
Chris
PS I was told the ball joint is bad but the parts guy said the
balljoint comes with the control arm...is this true or is there a
cheaper fix?
