If you seek factory looking, unobtrusive cupholders (not retractable, and
less convienient than a dash mounted set, although I hate those b/c they
block gauges, switches and stuff)....

check out scott mockry's site, www.sjmautotechnik.com and look in
the area of interior accessories. There are cup holders (dealer only)
designed to fit that carpeted retangular area behind the shifter (where
the phone went in a Type 44 200 20V). I actually believe that they
were meant for '88- up model 89-90s, as they are slightly short
for the type 44 slot, although they look perfectly factory. Availible
in several colors (I know for sure in both black and grey, don't know
about ecru) and not expensive. Scott's site has the P/N. Good for
standard US pop top can sized containers, or if you install only
one, slightly larger based containers. They are held in place by velcro
to the carpeted area, the pressure of the container does the rest.

my car doesn't have them. it's just a flat area with a carpet-like
material lining it.

i wouldn't mind turning it into cupholders, though.
