Put a big screwdriver with the blunt end to your ear, (doh..) and check
the stationary part of the serpentine belt tensioner while the engine
runs. The bearing on the tensioner is not cheap, and _will_ dry up in
time.. The rumbling is quite annoying after some time!
To check the fan bearing, get someone to start the engine while you hold
on to the fan. Move it in and outwards, and listen/feel for any rumbling
or noise. Do this in cold weather with cold engine, or the fan might
'bite' and start...

'92 S4 MTM, still with some defective bearing in the front.. jup, must
be the tensioner I guess..
