I had several discussions (complaints) about my 95' S6 Avant losing coolant=
after the Head gasket was replaced and Head checked several times this las=
t spring. The problem was finally solved by Anderson Motorsport. The prev=
ious mechanic who worked (used lightly) on it had the Head checked three ti=
mes by the same machine shop and every time it passed? The mechanic refuse=
d to have it checked by another machine shop (by my request) and it got pre=
tty ugly, as he used "Ceramic Seal" without my consent and told me that "if=
it stopped leaking" we were done. I had to file a dispute with Visa and d=
id recoup all of my money.
After the dispute was final, I took the car to Keith and Chris at Anderson =
Motorsport who proceeded to drop the oil pan and run a pressure test to see=
if they could physically see any leaks. Sure enough, coolant running down=
between cylinder 2/3. Knowing this, they pulled the head out (again) and h=
ad it checked with an Audi specific 5 cylinder plate (previous machine shop=
was checking it one cylinder at a time, which does not give an accurate se=
al, obviously). The machinist who properly tested it, cleaned it up and yo=
u could see numerous cracks in the cylinder walls. Despite all of my bad f=
ortune with this, George Grubr (of Czech Rep) approached me through S-cars =
about a head he had from a vehicle that was crashed. George gave me a smok=
in deal on a head with only 4k k/m on it. *Note- If you are importing anyt=
hing of this nature, be sure you have a good importer that will not surpris=
e you with hidden charges, as I did. Regardless after waiting two weeks fo=
r shipment/ customs clearance, I had an almost new head. The car is now ru=
nning better than ever (maybe a little too good for the local enforcement) =
but thanks to help from George and Anderson Motorsport I can sleep again (m=
aybe, because my wallet is not weighting me down anymore, but I can sleep.)
Moral of the story: If you unfortunately need to have the head checked, ma=
ke sure your machinist tests it properly.
p=2Es. Thanks to all of the people with suggestions during my extreme frust=
ration.
