[s-cars] My 6-speed is dying/question

That should work fine. Somewhere there is a list of parts that you need
to convert a 5 speed to a 6 speed. They are identical except for the
extra gear and the top drive ratio is the same. IE 5th = 6th. The
extra gear is squeezed in somewhere between 3rd and 5th. Ned Ritchie
investigated this and noted the transmissions only differ with about 13
internal parts. Note: All this information is from my personal
recollection so please do not take it as gospel, since brains as well as
syncros are known to fail. :)

Gentlemen (and Paul),

I have found out that the speed dependant knocking coming from what I
thought was a CV in on the prop shaft is actually the sound of a my
6-speed
(non CRB) dying. Probably the mesh between the ring and pinion. (Just
put
it in about 3 years/50K miles ago). I understand that the ring and
pinion
must be replaced as a matched set. My question is this: If I can find
a
five speed with a good ring and pinion, can I install the gears from my
6-speed onto the pinion from the 5- speed, then re-install that assembly
into my 6-speed's housing? I'm really not interested in buying another
6-$peed, but don't want to give up the extra gear.

DB...and the "B" don't stand for Braunschweig
