Could be many issues but here are some possible causes -

1) Bad O2 Sensor.
2) Cold solder Joints.
3) Incompatible or out of spec EPROM.
4) Minor ESD damage to ECU.

I would not consider a check engine light normal under any circumstances A
good upgrade will definitely not trigger a check engine light if everything else
in the car is 100%.
