Well, after arriving back in Denver from my recent trip, my copilot dropped
me off at Autosport Werks to pick up my car. Dave Jones and Brendan Rudak have
been working to engineer a parking brake solution for my Big Red Rear Brake
System(BRRBS tm). They finally have come up with the answer borrowed from the
WRC boys. As a reference I have 323x32 Porsche drilled 2 piece rotors and Big
Reds up front and now have 314x30 drilled 2 piece rotors and Big Reds at the
rear.
We had been trying to adapt a seperate parking brake caliper and some of you
might remember some pics of this Brembo caliper from a Ferrari 360. The
problem was a lack of room in the urS-car rear suspension. Once we decided to scrap
the seperate caliper, the only viable solution was a dedicated master
cylinder ala the WRC cars. The problem here was the activation of these MCs is
usually accomplished at the parking brake handle assembly with a direct linkage.
Wanting to maitain the stock PB handle and not tear up my interior required
Brendan to come up with another solution. This he did utilizing the stock handle
and cables by remotely mounting the MC near the rear suspension.
Now for the important stuff. Oh my goodness this car can stop!!! As I
departed ASW I was headed south on I-25 into the teeth of rush hour traffic to meet
my wife. The Denver traffic flow has the worst traffic going north in the
afternoon. I was headed south with so so traffic. Twice in this stop and run sort
of traffic I was able to exercise the maximum braking force of my new system.
I have also done several high speed to minimum speed deceleration runs that
were simply amazing. I had just driven Brian Billotti's Edwin which has 355
rotors up front and stock rears. The challenge with his car is the dive from the
severe force of those big front rotors. With this new setup dive is minimized
on my car. Brian and I are both going to be at Sears Point next month and it
will be interesting to do some comparisons. I'm also doing an open track day
here in Denver, Nov 1st and I'll have more impressions after that.
If anyone wants a picture, let me know.
