Audi issued a TSB in 1990 or so that says to delete the fuel pump screen
before install. This was to address the fuel tank liner decomp found in the late
80's 5k's <all>. Since the fuel pump already sits in a filtered pocket,
there is no need for the screeen.

It is possible that some contaminants in the fuel tank got stuck in the fuel
pump.
I had a similar issue where the fuel pump was replaced because it was noisy
... a day later the new one was just as noisy as the old. We pulled it to find
crap clogging the inlet of the fuel pump which we cleaned and pulled out as
much garbage as possible out of the fuel tank ...
It has been working fine for the last 20K miles.
