Hello again Sean,
I've read about the new locking tool (3256) required for the AAN. The
2084 used to clip over the old bolt-on front mounting plate on the I5 -
the other end would fit into the harmonic balancer and lock it. The
harmonic balancer hasn't changed, but the mounting plate isn't there on
the AAN, so they designed the 3256 to bolt onto the engine instead - SJM
doesn't rate this very highly and suggests some additional anchorage for
the 3256 - on his website (http://www.sjmautotechnik.com/S4timing.htm)
he states:
>I like to add some additional support for the 3256 tool when loosening
the crank bolt.
>I don't feel that the 10mm thread size bolt threaded into the engine
block is sufficient to hold the
>crank pulley from turning when breaking loose this bolt.
Another lister (I can't remember who) told me some time ago that he had
done an AAN using the old 2084 tool, so I'm going to give it a go. I
have an old I5 engine in the garage, so I can always remove the mounting
plate and try to bolt it on to the AAN to give the 2084 something to
clip into. If the worst comes to the worst, I could always rest the end
of the 2084 on an axle stand, it should still grip the harmonic balancer
properly.
If that doesn't work, then I'll just have to go out and buy a 3256 - I
bet it's not cheap though!
