Scott,
Iam a firm believer in driver training. I made my daughter come with me to
the NE Audi winter driving school in January. It was great fun for 2 days,
however, I feel the Keith Code Superbike school is the best bang for the buck. I
have taken all 4 levels. As a matter of fact I have taken the level 4 at least
4 times. I try to take a school once a year.
I have done 6 NE Audi track days, 4 Trackquest days, 3 PDA days, and
unfortunatly only 3 motorcycle days due to some cycling injuries. My year should add
up to about 18 events, and I will have spent substantially less than some of
my friends who are motorcycle club racers. My point is that there is no cheap
racing. I would love to have a dedicated track car, but I would need a place
to store it, a trailer to haul it, a vehicle to haul the trailer, and a place
to work on the vehicle. That does not include the track car, the mods or the
maintenance.
I have a friend who has a '87 Porsche 944 Turbo as a track car. It was cheap
to buy and he drives it to and from events. However, I know his mechanic
personally, and his maintainence bills are huge. My S6 is not the fastest or
smartest choice in a track car, and Iam not the fastest driver, but it is fully
paid for and was available. It is also still streetable and a lot of fun if
driven within it's limitations. I feel that driving any vehicle at it's limit is
the reason for being on the track in the first place.
By the way I also owned a '87 5000 TQ and was one of the early users of Ned
Richie's software. I did suspension, exhaust, and engine work on it but
unfortunately spent an inordinate amount of time just keeping it in good operating
order. I loved it, but considered it the equivalent of a flexible flyer and far
to undependable for the track. This of course could have just been problems
with this particular car, but I have heard this from other owners as well.
Regards,
Robert
