Riff,

Could be the 2 white plastic guide brackets for the hood release cable have
let go. Age/elements makes them brittle and they no longer hold securely in
the square holes in the rear of the upper rad support. Generall, you will
feel that the hood release moves back and forth loosly and hear the cable
moving under the hood, but nothing happens.

If this is your problem, to open the hood, use a bent metal hanger(what
else !) through the front grill in far left upper corner. With a flashlight
and a great deal of patience, you can snag the cable just before it goes
into the left hood pin and pull it out towards you.(It may seem like it will
never release at first, but may require significant pulling to pop since the
hood release cable minus guide pins is very loose, also watch to not
scratching plastic grill).

Once you get it open, straighten the hood release cable you just bent and
make sure to replace both plastic pieces(a couple of bucks at the stealer)
before you attempt to close the hood. Trying to re-use the old ones and
hoping they stay in this time will not work and you will have to re-do the
hanger thing(ask me how I know!)
