Thanks Jim - I will pass this on.  Sounds similar to my problem earlier this year which was resolved by another temp sensor.  I think your MAF suggestion is the more likely problem area.

On the KW engine, I would first look at the Air Temp. Sensor located on the
intake manifold. It is the sensor right in front of the little "Audi" logo
towards the back of the intake manifold and almost directly under the letter B in
turbo if you were looking down at the engine and intake. Take a look at the
connections. It will be a two wire but there is no plug. Pull back the boot to
expose the soldered wires and check if any are broken off. If that is OK, I
would then check the MAF. These seem to be the plausible culprits from what you
described.
