[s-cars] Time to upgrade

Here's my situation,
I own a 2000 VW VR6.  Since the warranty is up I've begun doing some
modifications (exhaust, chip, suspension, etc.). In that never-ending quest for ever
greater performance I discovered that there is a definite limit to the mods I
can do w/o spending extreme money.  In talking to a trusted mechanic and friend
I discovered that an Audi S4 may be the best bang for the buck.  But in doing
some Internet research of my own I discovered the S-Car site and found that
there is a whole family of S-Cars.  Given that my wife would stuff my lifeless
corpse in the trunk of a new S4 if I came home exclaiming, "look at our (my)
new car!", my only choice is to sell the VDub and buy a used vehicle.  This she
has agreed to, assuming that I break (more or less) even on the whole
transaction.  So my question is what would be the better choice of cars given my
situation the 1991 200 Quattro or the early S4/S6 as far as performance,
upgradeability, cost, reliability, etc.? Are there definitive opinions about each car?
Please share your insights.
