I've had both. My cable modem is significatntly faster than the DSL
service I previously had. Both services were/are rated with the same
up/down speeds and the cable modem always near the limit. I live in a
fairly populated area of california and many people in my area
telecommute and use the cable modems extensively.
Im not dissapointed with the cable modem... Although my DSL was rock
solid for 4 years it went out 1 time! the cable modem has been out 2 or
3 times in 4 months since we've had it.. just briefly but still..
connectivity was lost. i switched because dsl is not available at the
new home we bought.
bottom line- I wouldnt switch to DSL unless it was significatly cheaper
and the bandwidth was guaranteed to be equal or faster ;) to my cable
connection.
