[s-cars] Fuel Pump Incantations 101

Ahh yes, this was fun, I broke mine on the way to the one lap, several
laceration later and a full gas tank yielded a wonderful chemical burn
that reminded me of my trial for at least a week. I suspect the blood
in my tank may have caused other problems later.

Your fuel pump is in a carrier, it in turn is inside of a tube that is
mounted to the gas tank. There should be two arrows that line up when
they are tightened together, the inner pot/carrier for your fuel pump
and the outer. I used a screw driver to push against the inner pot to
spin it the 20 degrees or so that it needs to disengage from the outer.
It required quite a bit of strength and after talking to several Audi
mechanics about it, none thought it was possible with out the VAG tool.

If I remember correctly you will need to spin it counter clock wise,
makes sense.

Your hand will have to go in nearly parallel to the height of the fuel
pump carrier. It may also be possible to do it with a really long screw
driver like tool from the outside of the tank reaching into it.

To get it back in you do the reverse, I had some issue getting it lodged
in correctly so that when I tried to spin it back on with my screw
driver it didn't pop back out.

Good luck.

Trevor.

Patient: '95 urS6.
Operation: R&R fuel pump

So far, toe top plate is off the tank, the various hoses and electrical
connections are removed, and the fuel gauge sender is removed and out of
the way. That part was fairly easy. Now comes the part requiring a
special incantation. Apparently it involves some sort of baying at the
moon during the winter solstice while dancing and beating a drum.
Working
blind with only one hand which is mid-forearm deep in fuel, how do I get
the FP loose from whatever is holding it? It wiggles around down there
quite nicely and feels rather loose but it doesn't seem to want to lift
out
of there. The purdy pitchers in Bentley don't seen to help a whole lot.

Suggestions, please.
