Thanks for the information - unfortunately I took the instrument cluster
out and cleaned the contacts (the wire contacts for each of the three
connectors), and no dice. I noticed that the farthest left connector
was for the digital displays which control the clock, center panel, and
the odometer, and the only one that's screwed up is the center display).
I have a feeling that I'm hosed and it's just a defective display
overall. Any further ideas? If I do have to buy a new display, it
looks like I'm going to have to purchase the entire instrument cluster.
Have any ideas or know where I can get a deal on one? I don't relish
the idea of spending 700 dollars for Audi to provide me with one...
blah.
Thanks again for all the help folks...
Bryan

Remove 2/3 screws from bottom side of trim strip below cluster. Remove
said strip. Remove 3/4 scrrews thus exposed along bottom edge of
cluster. Pull cluster toward you and tip it so it is face down.
Disconnect the several electrical connections thus exposed. Don't apply
excessive force each connector has a catch mechanism which must be
released before it will come apart. Just figure these out and
disconnect them. The cluster is now free to be removed. Having the
wheel adjusted as far from the dash as possible and as vertical as
possible will provide greater clearance.

That being said, does anyone have any documentation on how to remove the
dashboard in order to do a quick cleaning? I will also do a search on
the archive, but I was wondering if anyone had any quick information on
the best way to remove the display. Thanks for the input..

Bryan,
This could be nothing more than a symptom of dirty internal contacts
inside the Instrument Cluster (IC). If so, the fix is to remove the IC,
open it up (including the hinged back side cover, clean the contacts,
perhaps apply a drop or two of contact enhancer, close it up, and put it
back in the car. Perhaps a 30 minute kitchen table job.

While you are in there this would be an excellent time to upgrade the
dim 1.1 watt instrument light bulbs with 2 watt bulbs from
rod at thepartsconnection.com. It requires about 10 of them for about
$1.25 each and will make a world of difference in night time instrument
visibility.

The center display in the dashboard console of my 2000 S4 has gone
haywire. The LED's in the center console display have begun to go on
the fritz, and the areas where the radio station, outside temperature,
and other computer information displays now have become unreadable due
to missing lines. I took it in to my local dealership and they said
that it wasn't a normal occurrence, but it would cost me over 700
dollars to fix it (essentially having to replace the whole dashboard
display). Unfortunately it's now obviously out of warranty by almost a
year, and I can't read any of the display (wish I had the current four
year warranty that they now offer on Audi's). The lines seem to come in
and out of view, sometimes lighting up, and other times being dead to
the world. Anyone have any suggestions on where I can get a cheap
replacement, or if there's anything electronically that I can do to fix
it? Just wondering if anyone else has had this problem.
