Here's some old list traffic for a repair procedure using a metal hinge.
It's been more than a year and has worked flawlessly.
This is one of the parts that some listers proudly brag has a "100% failure
rate".

You stated "I repaired mine with a 1-1/2 inch tall door hinge, 4 pop rivets
with backing washers, and about an hour's worth of work. After removing the
mounting base for the old hinge from the pedal, the spine of the door hinge
fits right into the cavity."
Now, how do you remove the mounting base? What 'type' door hinge did you
use? Like one for, say, a cabinet? UGH!!!
_______________________________
The hinge I would guess is intended for a cabinet door. Besides being 1-1/2
inches tall, it's 1-1/4 inches wide when flat and open. There are 2 holes
on each plate, and the plates are 1/32 inch thick. What I called the
mounting base is the portion of the broken part that's still attached to the
gas pedal. If you look from the back there are 2 holes that look like they
have plastic rivet heads in them. Drill off the plastic heads and this
mounting base pops out. Make note of where the spring is as you do this.
I don't know how to put into words the assembly procedure. It's just one of
those figure it out on-the-fly things. Wish I had taken some pictures along
the way. Two things I did do to increase the quality level of the job were
to use backing washers on the pop rivets, and drilling a shallow hole (about
1/8 inch deep) to recess the rivet heads where your foot would contact them.
If you haven't removed the pedal yet, the accelerator cable has a
rectangular eye on the end if it that just pops off the top of the gas pedal
rod. It's held onto a grommet by friction. Push up, and pop it off.
I don't think this is an obvious "better to repair" situation. For me right
now time is more plentiful than money, I hate throwing away such a big
assembly because of one small failure, and I like the challenge of seeing if
I can fix it.
Good luck!
