[s-cars] stock vs 3 inch exhaust

Hi,
My middle muffler just gave up its ghost and I was thinking about exhaust
options (95 s6).  Seems most of the after-market exhaust systems are a
single 3" pipe (or am I looking in the wrong places)?  Does 3" really
improve flow over the stock dual pipes?  I do not want loud exhaust, but I
am of course interested in improving performance.
