Guys I had the same problem a few years ago, for me it wasn't a weak battery, or motor problem, and certainly not a mystical "fart sensor"....it was simply the rotary switch and you can fix this yourself avoiding the high cost of a new one!
Pull the sunroof switch panel forward from the windshield towards you, it will unclip and fall about 6 to 8 inches dangling from the wires. Now unclip the rotary switch from the panel. Once you have the switch out you need to be extra careful seperating the rotary switch the small side clips break very easy (BTDT). Once the switch is open you want to clean the contacts and the metal prongs (dry pencil eraser or contact cleaner does a good job). I wanted extra insurance so I resoldered my switch wires as they looked a little dogey in my case. Then just reassemble as it was, shouldn't take you more than ½ hour. Mine has been working perfect ever since. (I'm going by memory on this, but I think that's about all there is to the procedure).
Cheers, /James.

My 93 S4 also does this while the switch is in the closed position. It
will tilt one notch open for no apparent reason. I find that if you put
your thumb over the 4 slots aft of the switch, the sunroof will close
and everything seems to be ok again. I am assuming that these slots are
some kind of sensor that opens the roof when it detects something in the
air inside the car. Maybe it is a fart sensor and the car is trying to
clear the air to make driving more pleasurable. All kidding aside, I
can see this on a Lexus but not on a German car. So does anyone know
the reason for this feature?
