On the topic of knock sensors and timing retard, has anyone tried one of 
these:

Not sure how it compares with the stock ECU facility, but it allows per 
cylinder retard with aggressive advance. Extremely popular with the WRX/STi 
crowd lately... used a lot in modified RX7s where a single knock can require 
a rebuild.
