[s-cars] Help - what did I do wrong w/camber plate install?

I jacked up the car, unfastened the outer 3 nuts on the camber plates,
unbolted the tower-to-tower bar, then unfastened the inner 3 nuts on the
strut bearing mount, then fashioned a 7/8" hollowed out deep socket with
Dremel and patience and used it in combination with an allen wrench and pipe
to undo the lock nut on the top of the strut. The nut shot off the car as
it was a bit sprung, but no damage. Now I can't figure out how to get the
camber plate out without using a spring compressor.
I've been told by several that you don't need one - would a Bilstien/Intrax
setup change that? Once I acquire a spring compressor, it looks like I'll
be able to pull the plate from the wheel well side but it seems like I'm
going about it wrong :-/
Any help/pointers would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
