Was this a joke? I am not sure I understand - are you suggesting that there
are not potholes in the Midwest?

I believe Ohio is still considered part of the Midwest. Michigan, too, or
so I always believed.

Some of the roads around here in NW Ohio resemble the cratered surface of
the moon.  The expansion joints alone could fail a weak suspension
component.
