FWIW, pulled the OEM K24 off the Avant apart the other day. @100,000 on
the turbo at the time it was pulled off the car. There are two visible
significant cracks in the internal hot side scroll that go "side to
side" through the narrow part, but are not otherwise externally
apparent. No abuse AFAIK by the prior owner (@ 80K), I think they can
.... just crack, though I'd suspect a really good thermal shock - drive
through a really deep puddle etc. if enough water somehow found its way
up, or down to a red hot exhaust manifold / turbine scroll could do it.
These two crack OTOH, seem to be internal however. At least any
disintegrating parts, if the scroll failed, ought to be on their way
away from, and out of the engine.
