[s-cars] squeaky rear

Hi Mike;

There has been a lot of discussion on this topic recently initiated by a
post I wrote describing some grease injection points I drilled into the
camber link heim joints to stop the squeak.

The rear suspension has an adjustable upper link used to set rear wheel
camber. The inner joint (bolted to the body) looks like a tie rod end. The
outer joint (bolted to the top of the wheel hub) is a heim joint with rubber
seals on both sides. The grease in this joint dries out and the joint starts
to squeak as the suspension flexes over bumps. If you drive it long enough
it will stop squeaking when the joint wears to the point it is just flopping
around on the inner bushing - this is not a happy situation as this is the
only thing keeping the rear wheel vertical.
The typical fixes are:
1. Replace the rear link ($$$)
2. Remove the joint seals and inject grease
3. Use a hypodermic grease needle to inject grease through the seal
4. Drill the joint body and use a hypodermic needle to inject grease into
the joint ( or add a grease fitting - a contentious issue centred around the
structural integrity of the joint once you have drilled a whacking great
hole in it).

Subject: [s-cars] squeaky rear

hey guys,

can anyone offer some info about a squeak in the rear. the sound just
started happening on my '93 s4. only when I go over bumps do I hear what
seems to be a squeak coming from the drivers side rear. i'm guessing it's a
bushing or something, but, I thought I would send it through the list to see
if anyone else has encountered this issue.

thanks,

mike
