Mihnea: Your comments on the socketted OEM chips to mid-92 (or so) could
explain why some people have thought that their cars had been chipped
when in fact they had not, i.e. they took the sockets to mean an
aftermarket chip had been installed.
However, your experience in Europe may or may not transfer fully to
North America or at least not to Canada. AFAIK, all of the 92 spec
elmwood Canadian "93" cars in the Vancouver area (typically with March
through June 92 build dates) did not have sockets. Maybe the socket
change was made at the end of Feb. 92 (??). Gabriel's car is a bit of
an odd ball (but in a good way) in that it has a 10/91 build date and it
was originally a European car ("ZZZ" VIN) that Audi Canada imported to
do the AutoShow circuit. Somehow it was saved from the crusher and
wasn't returned to Europe.
