[s-cars] RF keys again - kinda long

//S people,

It's been a few weeks without one, so I feel obligated to start another RF
thread.

I recently bought both my 95.5 S6 and a 96 A6 Avant. The Avant came with no
remotes, but the S came with one remote - one beat up, dead battery,
looks-like-it-got-wet-inside remote. I decided to try to get remotes going
for both cars. First I bought a new remote from the dealer and a battery
for the old remote. Then I gathered up keys, remotes, and both cars to
begin programming. I took the old remote and programmed it work with the
Avant. No problem. Well, no problem except that it would only lock the
car, not unlock it.

As I was pondering this, I locked the car a few times. On the third or
forth time, I caught a glimpse of the lights flashing on the S6 parked
outside the garage. Apparently the S had not forgotten about the remote,
and it was programmed to work with both cars...well to LOCK both cars, but
not unlock them.

Not good. Then, in a moment of horror, I remembered that all the S keys
were on the front seat in the S...the locked S that the remote would not
unlock. Very bad. (sigh)

Fortunately, the sunroof was in "tilt" mode, and I was able to snag a key
off the passenger seat with a long piece of coat hanger. Fortunately, there
was a Little League game around the corner, so only 4 or 5 thousand people
drove by to witness my witlessness.

Anyhoo, I eventually recovered from this setback, disconnected both
batteries, and started from scratch. I easily got the old remote to work
with the Avant, but the new one would not work with either car, even with a
new battery. I am assuming that I am doing the programming correctly; it is
a very simple procedure that even I can handle (though the keys locked in
the car thing might indicate otherwise) and the Avant works perfectly. Do I
have a bad remote, or am I missing something?

The other, more pressing question I have is this:
The Avant remote has automagically associated itself with seat memory
position 1. Every time I unlock the car, the seat moves to M1. Since I
like to have the car set up so that my wife can drive it, this would be a
very good thing if I had multiple remotes. I do not have multiple remotes,
though, so this is not good. Is there any way to make the remote "forget"
about the seats and just unlock the car?

TIA

Tom
