Paul,
I would check the air intake first. No BTDT on the S6 but on Mazda 626 and
Honda Accord. Yes, I know, I've been an heretic in the past, but I was young
and stupid. Anyway, both time it was due to a leak in the air intake. Once a
failed intake manifold gasket, once a cracked rubber boot.
Time to check if the air intake pressure tester works also with vacuum.

Anyone know of a DIY vacuum test? Love to try it, esp. as NEA found one I
had for ??? long when they had the head off. My intake is silent as a
mouse, wonder about vacuum.
My gauge says I run about 21 psi @ idle I think, 26 or so @ cruising light
to no throttle. That sound normal? If I had a vacuum issue what would the
gauge tell me?
Still tho, my seat 'o pants keeps telling me it was an ignition thang.
Hasn't done it since, only those 2x knock wood. Funny how things like this
arise after 'touching' the car... always seems to be the case (head off,
chip re-tuned, NEA aluminum POS cover installed <more heat retainage or
better heat sink who knows?>, etc.).
And thanks Hap for the plug / boot reference... though when my plugs and
boots failed, it was felt under load not under cruise / off throttle.
They're not super old (like 20k?), and the car runs fab. Bruce M. chimed in
that his POS started this way years ago. Something I'll keep my eye on I
suppose.
I'd be bored I guess if nothing ever burped... , uh, right?
