[s-cars] steering damper - VW Fox Application

"Excessive" wandering appears to be an indication that a new one is needed.
What is excessive? Beats the hell out of me. Bentley does not say much on
the testing procedure other than to ensure that the stroke is smooth and
uniform over the entire range. The mechanics are really nothing different
from a shock/strut (aka dampener) which is a routine wear item. I am
approaching 85K miles on my S6 and figure it's about time for a refresh.
Don't know how helpful the above is but...
Regards,
Mark

Perhaps a silly question, but I'll ask it anyway... how do you know if you
need a new Steering Damper? what are the signs or procedure to indentify if
the Steering Damper is on it's way out... at $25 that's a great price if it
fits the job and improves steering... assuming the old tired unit needs
replacing...
Cheers, /Jamu.

Hi Ron:
I believe many have gone to a VW Fox steering damper. It is on my to-do
list that is getting ever longer. The part number I have documented is 305
425 021 2. Scott Mockry(sp?) has them for $25. Perhaps somebody who has
installed this can chime in.

1. Is this a dealer only item?
2. Anybody have a part number?
3. Judging by sir Bentley, it looks like a straight forward r&r. Any
BTDT's
4. Thanks in advance.
Ron W.
