[s-cars] IR to RF conversion

i'm back after a long hiatus.  i went on a long vacation, and set myself
to no mail for a while.  when i got back, i couldn't figure out how to
get back on the list.  i finally figured it out and here i am.

the IR system in my '92 seems to have taken a permanent leave of absence.
the alarm system still works - the horn beeps quietly when i lock the
doors, and the alarm went off when i closed the trunk but didn't quite latch
it properly.

i'd like to convert it to RF, and was looking at the link that bill posted
some time ago:

has anybody here done this conversion?
i'm also wondering why he used relays for the pin 4 and pin 3 connections.
i understand he wanted to ensure that positive voltages never got applied
to the factory alarm inputs (which are expecting a negative voltage), but
why not use diodes?

are there any other alarms besides the prestige APS-25KB that have been
determined to work?
