Was it just as the clutch was engaging?  I wonder if the noise could
have been coming from the clutch?  Does the clutch tend to grab or chatter
when you are starting off gently?  I seem to recollect clutch noise like
this when there was a seal leak getting a bit of oil on the clutch.  Not 
an S car.  I can't even remember what it was, probably a VW of some sort.
