You can get a Legacy GT Limited for less than $32k.

The Legacy GT Limited does not have the "bank vault" feel of the
Germans, but getting close, while providing features on par and much
higher performance. The Legacy 2.5 GT is now quite a fast car.

The Forester STi would be tops on my list of small wagons, if I didn't
need a V-8 so badly.

As Pizzo says, FP Green, UTEC, injectors and exhaust will make that
Legacy into a near 400hp monster. Do that to an Audi for less than
$5k.
