And then there is the trick of adding a small amount (1 tablespoon (?))
of red automatic transmission fluid to your oil (I have personally never
done this or had to do it).  As the story goes, the detergent qualities
of the AT fluid helps to de-gum the lifters and they quiet down as a
result.
