OK, here is what finally happened.
The dealer (out of town, 1.5 hrs. away) called with the news that it was the
cam position sensor and that they could replace it for $790 - if they could
find one. None in Rochester, none in Twin Cities. Would have to order out
of California. OK, I said. I'll call you back.
Got on the phone and called Anderson Motorsport's, among others. Chris (my
wrench for things I can't, or don't want to do) said he could have a sensor
in hand by 1 PM for $275. I said "Go for it." I picked it up, drove the
1.5 hours to Rochester and had Park Place Motors put it in. They billed me
for the diagnosis and two hours of labor, which I thought was fair under the
circumstances. They serviced me right away and did what they said they
would do.
Now, I wish this had all happened at home - I would have done it myself, but
it didn't. As my wife said last night - "You could have broken down by the
side of the road with a sick friend and sub-freezing temperatures. That
didn't happen. Look on the bright side."
So, I'm looking on the bright side. Miss Piggy is back in the garage. I
spent more on myself for Christmas than I planned. It could be worse.
