Friend of mine tried a similar excuse when he got tagged at 60 in 
a 35 zone (or something similar). He was taking his Porsche in for 
the annual state inspection and had to warm up the engine...

"Officer, I had to warm the engine up for the inspection..."

The line was so memorable that the cop quoted it verbatim to the 
judge.
