Yes... that's exactly what mine does (except for the Autobaun part). It
seems useless. And one time when I accidentally drove the car for an
extended period of time without coolant, it didn't really indicate any
noticeable change either. I assumed that it is broken. But I do notice
that when the key is off, the needle pins all the way down. So the gauge
DOES move, but I can't tell if it is showing me the truth or not.

I have something like this. Most of the time, the needle appears to
sticks at about 60C. But driving on the Autobahn for 6 hours at speeds
up to 140 - 150 mph the needle does get up to 90 C. It just takes a
while.
Now either I have a great oilcooler which is highly unlikely. Or the
temp sensor has an extraordinarily long rise-time like 6 hours which
is also unlikely. So I can't figure out either what the deal is
either.
