93 with old style felt paper gasket as well, and I did do all the work
myself so I am positive.

Subject: [s-cars] RE: AAN CR vs 3B vs gaskets
I doubt this will resolve anything but, (a) FWIW and (b) IMO I'm going
to
(c) agree with both Mihnea and Scott, cause it's too dangerous to
disagree
:-) as follows:
1. While I didn't do the actual removal, I was told on at least one of
my
'93 AAN motors that the "old style felt/paper head gasket was removed,
and
replace with the new steel version...." so at least some of the AAN's
came
with something other than the newer steel gaskets, and I believe someone
commented on the progress of Cody's rebuild that his old block was, I
think
fitted with the original gasket which wasn't steel? Cody do you know?
2. On the compression ratio, I can't see the factory still maintaining
and
consistently publishing a 9.3 to 1 CR claim for the AAN even after use
of
the steel gasket became common place. Without actually measuring and
comparing the compressed height of the a steel vs. the older felt
gasket, I
don't think there is any compelling reason to conclude that one is
necessarily thicker than the other, therefore CR with the steel gasket
is
dropped 3/10ths of a point.
I'd like to suggest the next time someone has a spark plug out; a burst
of
energy coupled to a spat of unrequited curiosity; and a burette of some
suitably slimy fluid sitting about, perhaps they might move the
questionable
cylinder's piston up to TDC and fill the remaining volume with a
carefully
measured volume of vegetable oil or hydraulic fluid and report back on
the
results?
HTH
Mike

~I beg to differ Scott, I know of at least 5 AAN motors fitted from the
~factory with paper (no fiber there) headgaskets, I've even helped with
the
~metal gasket swap, and so can I give you a few email addresses of
~people in
~the UK who have BTDT too.
