[s-cars] 993tt vs. 996

Hi James,

There has been much discussion over the similarities/differences between the
993tt and 996 calipers. In short:

1. 993tt's are heavier than 996's
2. Both use the same diameter pistons
3. The two use different size pads, but the effective pad size (swept area)
appears to be a touch larger on the 996's (offset, of course, by the cooling
capability of the GT2 rotor)
4. The 996 is a "wider" caliper than the 993tt, but not as "tall" or "long"
as the 993tt, but both fit under 16" wheels (see #9 below)
5. 996 caliper requires an Euro A8 rotor (314x30), which is HEAVIER than
the GT2 2-piece rotor
6. Unlike the GT2 rotor, the A8 rotor is not directionally-vaned
7. GT2 rotors are pre-cast with holes drilled
8. RS2 brackets are forged; 996 brackets (through BIRA) are machined. Both
are caliper-specific.
9. 993tt's fit under MOST 16" wheels with the use of a 5mm spacer. 996
monoblocs do not require a spacer to fit under MOST 16" wheels. Both
calipers are DAMN CLOSE to the inner wheel, and if you get a rock or
anything in between, something's going to give, and most likely it is the
paint on the the caliper.
10. performance is nearly identical on an UrS4. Remember that both
calipers were designed to be used on ALL FOUR CORNERS of a 2900lb car. That
said, you cannot go wrong with either.
11. Pad choices are plenty and not cheap, regardless of caliper.
12. Both use the same size brake line and require reversal of the
cross-over line.

So what's the advantages and/or disadvantages of the following:

RS2 brackets versus the BIRA brackets?
933tt versus 996 calipers?

Since prices are very similar for both packages... is there a performance
difference or fitment issue for different wheels?

Cheers, /James "asking more questions" Murray.

There have been quite a few questions sent to me as to the overall prices of
the 993TT upgrade using the RS2 brackets. The prices below are off the top
of my head, but they are close. A phone call to Sunset and/or Crescent
Porsche will verify most of the list. If it says est., I don't remember
exactly, but it is close enough.

New
$600 993tt Big Red Porsche calipers (Sunset Porsche, Oregon)
$200 RS2 caliper brackets (Europrice)
$30 Porsche caliper bolts (Local Porsche dealer, est.)
$100 323mm Audi A8L rotors (IMC prices)
$60 Textar Pads (Sunset Porsche, est.)
$30 Dampers (Sunset Porsche, est.)

-----
$1,020	NEW EVERYTHING
$50 Brake Lines
